What does one do when feeling low
????
Well for me its simple
.. Pick up a book and get lost in someone else’s fantasy world.. Helps me forget
..
My mom introduced me to books when I was probably 5.. When I had just mastered reading
.. Thankyou Mom
!!
Its been a wonderful journey and mind you, it’s not yet over.. There’s so much to read- it’s never ending and I’m so grateful.. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of it
..
Here are some of the books I have read recently or I am going to read soon. Will post more as and when I remember…
- My first Christie novel which was so good that I had to read her other works too.. Simply enthralling and gripping thriller. In the novel, ten people, who have previously been complicit in the deaths of others but have escaped notice and/or punishment, are tricked into coming onto an island. Even though the guests are the only people on the island, they are all mysteriously murdered one by one, in the manner of the nursery rhyme, Ten Little Indians.
- Trojan Odyssey is a Dirk Pitt novel by Clive Cussler. The book opens with a fictional historical overview to events of Homer’s famous Odyssey. In the story, the protagonist is involved in the search for the source of a brownish contamination in the ocean’s waters, which leads to a diabolical plot that they must unravel and ultimately topple. The climax is extremely unexpected..!! A very well written series of events, which doesnot let you put the book down.
- After 6 years Dan Brown is back with his character Robert Langdon of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ fame. The book focuses on the Freemasons which is a secret brotherhood very prominent in America. Dan Brown should be commended again for his excellent style of combining fiction with historical facts making the read exciting. However you get a sense of deja vu, as you can draw parallels with ‘Angels and Demons’. After a 6 year wait, ‘The Lost Symbol’ doesnot satisfy in terms of originality.
- Mosaic is a story of love and betrayal, of a clash of cultures and traditions. Dina a successful working mother and wife in New York comes home to find her twins and husband missing. Realising her husband has gone back to his homeland in Jordan in order to raise her children there, Dina understands that her marriage was never perfect. She battles Jordan’s beauracracy and her family to get her children back. The story tells you till what length a desperate mother can go to protect her children. Extremely moving tale.
- This is an autobiographical book by world renowned cyclist Lance Armstrong. The book was written shortly after Armstrong had won the 1999 Tour de France. In 1996, he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer, which spread to his lungs, abdomen and brain, and was only given a 40% chance of living. This disrupted his career. However he fought back the disease, got on his bike and one the tour. That’s not it. He won the tour 6 times consecutively establishing a record. Extremely awe-inspiring. Makes you believe nothing is ever impossible.
- This is Rand’s fourth, longest and last novel. The book explores a dystopian United States where leading innovators, ranging from industrialists to artists, refuse to be exploited by society. I’ve yet to read it. The sheer size is intimidating.
- Isn’t it true that mom’s constantly tell their daughters to learn household chores along with studying and making a career? Well mine does and I’m quite grateful (not really, it was only during reading this book ;)). Its an extremely funny story of how a workaholic lawyer ends up as a domestic help. Well you can guess what happens next, right? Trouble.. Trouble.. And more trouble.. Samantha is a total handicap in the kitchen.. Its an entertaining read as to how she copes up with this new situation. A must for all chick-lit lovers!!!
- This is Madhav Mathur’s debut novel. Pranav Kumar, the protagonist, is tired of his advertising job. He wants his life to be more meaningful than just convincing people that ‘they are what they own’. He thinks it’s time the world changed. So he gets his like-minded friends to decide their future course of action.
- This is the first book of the In Death Series Collection. Nora Roberts writing as J. D. Robb introduces us to the world in 2050. It is a series of futuristic science fiction police procedurals. It features NYPSD Detective Eve Dallas and her husband Roarke and are set in New York City. Despite the emphasis on solving a crime in each of the books, the overall theme of the series is the development of the relationship between Eve and Roarke. I’m a total sucker for cop books, and this series is one of my favourites.
- The title and story is a play on the Biblical brothers, Cain and Abel. The book tells the stories of two men born worlds apart. They have nothing in common except the same date of birth and a zeal to succeed in life. A power struggle ensues and only one can survive. A must read for all.. Extremely captivating!
- Meg Cabot takes help of e-mails, SMSes and IMs to create this funny and sweet romantic story. A typical boy saves girl situation with evil office tyrants, a pastry chef and a perfect double fudge pudding all thrown into the mix. Must read for all chick-lit lovers..
- Chetan Bhagat is back with another story, one which he claims is his own.
