Something About Achievements

April 9, 2010

I have always felt that I have not had any major achievements in life. I maybe travelling the path to achieving something, but have not conquered much till now.

Somehow while on this thought-trail, I end up comparing myself to Rafael Nadal. Now, he is around my age, and look where he is right now. I have done nothing compared to what he has done. I don’t know why my mind jumps to him, I don’t have any particular liking for him, even though I love tennis a tad too much. Now I’m digressing from the point.

My father always says that when you think you have achieved everything, it is the point when you stop learning. And learning as we all know is as important as breathing. But yet that thrill of feeling a sense of accomplishment is what I long for.

What is the definition of accomplishment for a student anyways? Striving for acquiring the best of education which will help in a secure future. And more importantly liking what you do. So I am doing all of that, ain’t I? The journey is definitely very long and tedious, makes one forgets the final destination. It is tiring and confusing at times, but the end picture should be clear enough to lure one to move forward.

But why isn’t it enough, even if I know all this? Am I being impatient? In my defense I am trying to settle for the past 22 years, and am still struggling. It might be normal, but I can wonder, can’t I?

I don’t why I am being so philosophical suddenly. This must sound very boring. But I am having these thoughts for quite a long time, and it was high time I got it all out. I am sure this is a by-product of studying The Income Tax Act for a full week. CA does this to you.

My younger cousin lifted my spirits the other day. She is in her first year of graduation and was struggling with financial accounting. It was a cake-walk , made me feel quite good about myself, a balm to my down-in-the-dumps mood.

Maybe I have done something right along the way. Am sure I will make it. Thinking this makes me happy, so why not continue this thought process, at least for the time being?

The journey is more important than the destination. Achievement to me signifies some type of ending (like a destination). I like to keep trying and doing something which is more important to me than achieving.

    Pooja

Your dad is right. This is my favorite quote from now onwards.
“My father always says that when you think you have achieved everything, it is the point when you stop learning”

And regarding your post , answer is very simple you now.

Think of today .You got 24 Hrs.Forget about past and future.Just live your life today.Set targets for yourself in that day.
Give your best to achieve those targets. That target could be anything other than sleeping.

When you chase your targets , you learn alot. And when you accomplish them , you are happy from inside. That is the best achievement of life.

And if you keep setting new targets , you will definitely cross new dimensions in your life.

You have already won the hearts of lot of young people on internet with your writing .That is your biggest achievement so far.

You know what! Sometimes, after achieving something… something big, we realize that we missed the pleasure during the journey. So, I enjoy the journey more than the achievements!

And, an achievement need not be something like a good career or a good job. It can be something more worthwhile like having learnt how to stay happy always too, right? 😀

Forget about achievements! Enjoy the journey 🙂

wow I am getting some very insightful comments..
you are right haresh, to be happy is and should be our final aim in life, otherwise what’s the point?

Things in theory and practice are quite different…this my Experience as CS tells me

Though still a trainee, I know feeling is great, but beware of the illusion, it takes to nowhere

Sorry to dampen the spirits..but do relish your success 🙂

    • April 11, 2010 11:16 AM

everyone should enjoy their success, because it i “SUCCESS” afterall, fif you get my drift..
but defining success and being contented after achieving it, becomes difficult at times.

U still didnt got my point here..anyhow chill 🙂

Hi…achievement is not the end..it is a milestone on the journey called life. Everytime you reach a milestone, you should be eager to reach the next 🙂
I will quote Sachin Tendulkar as an example…numerous achievements, every one a milestone in his career, and you know he is not going to stop here, but keep going!

    • April 11, 2010 11:17 AM

yes i know, one becomes stagnant if they are satisfied with one win. you need to keep working for more. but when do you stop?

  6. April 10, 2010 12:10 AM

“when you think you have achieved everything, it is the point when you stop learning.” is good advice.
But one must not compare too with other people’s achievements.

oh maannn.. i can completely relate to your plight..
sometimes even i go into this idiotic philosophical mood unlike the usual insane me 😉
personally i would say bask in the glory for that time.. since life is all full of ups and downs.. enjoy your achievements and strive harder for more..
people sometimes get all philo and say concentrate on the joourney.. not the goal..
but wen u dont have a goal u dont have a journey… right??
so keep a goal..once u achieve it create another goal… create new journeys…
imagine you are on a world tour.. where every goal is like a country you visit.. 🙂
once u visit one country you don just stop at that right.. u want to see more.. so create more goals in the same way.. let the hunger for more remain..cos till it remains you will LIVE if there is no hunger/thirst you jus EXIST…
grrrrr…thats my piece of stupid insane gyaan…
    pardon kar de oi …
    bahut bol diyaa shayad 😀

    • April 11, 2010 11:20 AM

i love the parallel drawn with touring.. now that did boost my spirit!
and i love long comments, so you can go on and on, i won’t mind at all :)..

  8. April 10, 2010 10:30 AM

That does happen, always, with everyone!

Why do you compare yourself to others, even if it is Nadal? Do you think Rafael Nadal can write so well as you do? If you want to compare your achievements, then compare it with yourself. As time passes, try to improve yourself and you will soon be reaping the benefits.

If you want to achieve something, first set a goal. Then work on it, with all your efforts and passion.. Ultimately, you will be the winner!

    All the Best, Pooja! 🙂

    • April 11, 2010 11:22 AM

haha you’re sweet.. i bet nadal can’t write, all he can do is grunt :P..

comparing comes very naturally, you just cant help it.. don’t you compare yourself with anyone at all?

      Thanks Parth :D!

  9. April 20, 2010 8:22 PM

    Haha!
Long long ago, so long ago that I don’t remember how long ago, I had similar worries when comparing my life to that of Martina Hingis. She is my age, and when I was finding my feet in life through school, university and first job, she was smashing tennis records.

So I know how it feels, just as a reference point!

But look where she is now. Nobody remembers now and whatever she does in life, she would be compared to her tennis achievements and may not reach such heights again.
So i have convinced myself that I am a late bloomer, and am yet to bloom 🙂

    Life feels all rosy now!

    Cheers!
    Vasu

I wouldn’t say late bloomer.. It’s just normal.
These players start so early, their careers end early too..
It just depends on what you do ultimately.

I have put the below quotes, right on top of my blog. Since its my own blog , these quotes come to my mind whever I am in a best or a difficult situation.

    “Life is a school.
There is something new to learn
    wherever we may be,
    wherever we go,
    wherever we turn ”

I would also add, life is not over till the last day of your life, hence achievement today are gone tomorrow, sadness today are gone tomorrow. Only your good deeds survive forever.

Why one should compare oneself with super achievers like Nadal? Then almost everyone would have to burry his head in his own hands and cry. Let that be the headache of people like him who are in competition with him. If you look into yourself you will find sparks within you (like for example this blog that you have poured your heart into. It’s touching and expressive). Please do not define achievement in measurable terms of trophies and money only.

    hi,
achievements are important in life as they are the real source of contentment in life but eually important is the journey and yes the road landing to your goals….amazing post…you have weaved your thoughts so well…nice post

Very interesting post , having gone through various stumble blocks in my career.I agree with your thoughts.Making difference to someone’s life is more important than earning money or trophies.Money doesn’t last long but good actions do

Good luck with your journey! Achievements, I believe, happen in every little thing and you too surely have your own personal collection of them. Just keep going. 😀
